WATCH YOUR TIME
I always loved aesthetics. Not particularly fashion, but an idea of beauty. I think God is the most fantastic designer. The difference between style and fashion is quality. I design from instinct. It’s the only way I know how to live. What feels good. What feels right. What is needed. Give me a problem and I will approach it creatively, from my gut. I don’t try to be in fashion; I don’t try to follow trends. You just end up out of fashion that way.
SECOND TO NONE
I like things simple. Fashion is a very stressful place to work because of the demands of doing the shows – no one expects a writer to produce two books a year on the dot – but it’s also a very toxic place to work. We live in an era of globalization and the era of the woman. Never in the history of the world have women been more in control of their destiny. I am convinced that there can be luxury in simplicity. Fashion fades, only style remains the same.
BECOME THE WRIST TACKERS
Design is a series of creative choices – it’s a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be. Fashions fade, style is eternal. I think it’s the responsibility of a designer to try to break rules and barriers. It’s hard to balance everything. It’s always challenging. I love things that age well – things that don’t date, that stand the test of time and that become living examples of the absolute best.
