Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. It is difficult to talk about fashion in the abstract, without a human body before my eyes, without drawings, without a choice of fabric – without a practical or visual reality. There are always protests, whether you do something good or bad. Even if you do something beneficial, people say you do it because it’s advertising. I think it’s an old fashioned notion that fashion needs to be exclusive to be fashionable. My customers are successful workingwomen.
You can hide so much behind theatrics, and I don’t need to do that any more. For me, art is about learning and about living with people. It’s alive. Men have got more of a discerning eye. They appreciate cut and details, things that aren’t so obvious. They like things that have cachet and gentlemanliness. War taught me that not everything is glamorous. There has to be a balance between your mental satisfaction and the financial needs of your company.
